There’s a particular kind of agent failure that isn’t about the model being wrong or the code being bad. The agent writes correct code, attempts to deploy it, and then hits a browser-based OAuth flow or a CAPTCHA or a “click the link in your email” gate — and stalls. The human in the loop either isn’t watching or isn’t there at all. The session times out.

Cloudflare’s solution is small but pointed: a new --temporary flag for Wrangler, its deployment CLI.

Running wrangler deploy --temporary provisions a fresh Cloudflare account, deploys the specified Worker, hands the agent an API token, and provides a claim URL. The deployment stays live for 60 minutes. If a human wants to keep it, they follow the claim URL and go through a normal sign-up or login flow to make it permanent. If nobody claims it, the account and everything attached to it disappear automatically.

No pre-existing account required. No OAuth flow blocking the agent. No email confirmation. The agent deploys, tests its output against the live URL, iterates if needed, and exits — all within a single uninterrupted session.

The design is worth unpacking. The 60-minute window isn’t a compromise; it’s the point. Agents working in tight write-deploy-verify loops typically need a live target for minutes, not hours. Making the default behavior ephemeral means unclaimed test deployments don’t accumulate. And because the claim URL is generated at deployment time, a human can step in and take ownership of something that worked — the agent’s output becomes a starting point rather than a throwaway.

Cloudflare explicitly frames this as a response to how background AI sessions are increasingly the norm. The company notes that authentication flows designed for humans — browser redirects, time-sensitive confirmation emails, MFA prompts — are structurally incompatible with non-interactive agent sessions. The traditional solution has been to pre-provision API keys and bake them into agent configurations, but this requires setup work that defeats the purpose of autonomous agents that are supposed to handle deployment end-to-end.

The immediate beneficiary is agentic coding assistants. The scenario Cloudflare describes is an agent that takes a user’s code, deploys it to a live environment, and returns a URL — no user account required, no setup step, no manual intervention. The agent handles infrastructure the way it handles file I/O: as an implementation detail of the task, not a blocking prerequisite.

There’s an interesting security angle too. Temporary accounts with no persistent credentials are actually easier to reason about than long-lived API keys sitting in agent context windows. A key that expires in 60 minutes and then ceases to exist can’t be leaked in the traditional sense — by the time someone extracts it from a log, it’s already gone. This isn’t a complete security story (agents can still do damage within 60 minutes), but the threat model is more tractable than permanent credentials in code repositories.

The feature shipped June 19 and is available in Wrangler now. It’s the kind of infrastructure change that doesn’t generate much press on its own but quietly makes a category of agentic workflow practical that was previously annoying enough to work around.

Authentication has been the mundane drag on agent autonomy for two years. This is one fewer place it catches.
